Giclée Prepress details the adjustments needed to make an image look it's best for printing machines (and audiovisual displays).

Mesney's book targets the 'disconnect' between people and printing. People know how to make good pictures in PhotoShop® but many don't know that prepress adjustments are needed to make the best looking prints or electronic displays of those pictures, or even what "prepress" is. As a result, they sometimes mistakenly blame good printing machines and displays for bad results.

Fine quality prints are made with a two-step process, the author explains. "When the picture looks good in PhotoShop® you are half-way there. The second step is adjusting the image file for specific printing machines or other output like audiovisual shows or the web. That work is called 'prepress'".

Prepress means success when it comes to printing. Prepress adjustments extend the dynamic tone range of pictures and match them to the gamut and 'character' of the printer and media used for output. The author is the proprietor of Vashon Island Imaging, a fine-arts printing and publishing company, and is himself an artist illustrator. The book was inspired by his experiences teaching the company's digital imaging seminars.

"Teaching digital imaging seminars at Vashon Island Imaging made me aware that there is a 'disconnect' between people and their printers," explains the author. "It is a knowledge gap. The missing information is what other books don't tell you... that your basic images must be adjusted for specific output devices if they are to look their very best."
